|10:58 pm - Brush with greatness|
About a third of you are old-school geeky enough to remember USENET newsgroups and so will be as thrilled by this as I am.
Big Brother 4 started in the UK last Friday; it has since been revealed that one of the housemates, one Jon Tickle, used to post on rec.arts.tv.uk.misc, rec.arts.tv.uk, uk.media.tv.misc, and rec.arts.books.tolkien; you can check his apparently complete USENET posting history through Google Groups, né DejaNews.
Anyway, it only turns out that one of his posts from January 1996 - in which he discusses appearing on Blockbusters with his twin brother - was following-up directly to one of mine.
I now have a definite reason to take an interest in this year's BB. GO JON!
Current Mood: triumphant
Current Music: F.L.Y. - "Hello from Mars"; the Latvian entry, should've won
Some of us still post regularly!
Preach on, brother.
Admittedly I can't remember the last time I posted to a newsgroup as such
, because I use the same newsreader interface for newsgroups and mailing lists and most of my newsreader activity goes on Yahoo!Groups groups these days, for no particularly good reason. Sadly most of the good content and good posters have migrated from USENET - many, happily, to LJ, though some web bulletin boards have taken off remarkably well, even among a few slightly web-discussion-hostile communities.I'd love to support someone who has a bit of geekery in his blood, but I'm not sure I can face another eight weeks of his relating the plots of novels about alien races.VOTE GEEK. VOTE MONOSPACED. VOTE JON.
(Actually, aren't we voting to evict rather than to save at the moment? Don't vote Jon in that case.)And you're right, the Latvian entry rocked.
In the meantime, this link
You do realise that I'm going to have to become even more obscure and geeky to stay ahead of the game now, don't you?
Current Music: Delfinai - Viskas Bus Gerai (Lithuanian National Final 2001)
Obscure and geeky? Ericklendl? Shurely shome mishtake
1) Is it any good?
2) Are you going to release a mp3 of you singing along to it?
3) Can you provide a link to it?

Re: Obscure and geeky? Ericklendl? Shurely shome mishtake
Yes, no and possibly.
Not necessarily in that order.
Yep, I remember USENET, and no doubt would be on it still today if it weren't for LJ.
I posted mostly in the transport-related newsgroups: check out ba.transportation, misc.transport.urban-transit , misc.transport.road , sac.general .
Those were the days . . .
Ah Jon. I quite like him and I'm sure we'd get on fine although I rather suspect if I was forced to live with him 64/24/7 we'd annoy each other. I rather suspect he's this years Alex from BB3.
I also suspect he'll be voted out this week, if only because he's slightly 'different'. Probably a shame.
I quite like the fact that they've gone to great lengths to find two people with the same exotic name (Anoushka, Anousca, whaddever) and put them in the house. Cunning.
It's just like the The Addams Family pinball table.
The... A... noushka!
Daaa, diddle-iddle aa, diddle-iddle-aa, diddle-iddle-aaaaa, diddle-iddle-iddle-aa aa, diddle-iddle-aa aa, diddle-iddle-aa aa aaaa, diddle-iddle... *zingy bit*
Well played, Thing, you're really on the ball!
And getting back on topic, I bet Jon has played that at some point in his Physics-geeky existence. :-)
There are, as far as I know, no pinball machines in Cambridge.
Looks I might spend some of tomorrow downloading PinMAME then. Hurrah!
I had considerable difficulties trying to get the PinMAME / Visual Pinball combo to work when I tried, but I did manage to find something and get it to work which played all the tunes from a set of The Addams Family ROMs. Can't remember what.
It's a great day for
racing Cambridge and a great day for pinball.
This is just before I arrived in UMTM/RATUM (I suspect he left uni the term before I arrived, since I went back as a mature student), but
Irreparable invalid markup ('<lj-user="imc">') in entry. Owner must fix manually. Raw contents below.]
This is just before I arrived in UMTM/RATUM (I suspect he left uni the term before I arrived, since I went back as a mature student), but <lj-user="imc"> is also in a thread with him, although he's replying to Jon. We already said we liked Jon (although he's probably boring the voting public) and now we want to keep him in!
I still post in UMTM, and lots of other places in Usenet, so I might go see if anyone's spotted this there.
Oops, stuffed that up slightly. That should read imc
is in a thread with him.
There's further discussion of this in The Mirror
, you know - link courtesy of daweaver
. Looks like the words of your DH made it into print
. (Ooh, and a second time, too!
Wonder if there are copyright issues in play here? Time for X-Bugger-Off-The-Mirror tags, maybe?
And they've misquoted, too - DH appears to be thanking himself in one post, and they've attributed a paragraph of his to Jon. Hmmmmm. Not happy with that, and have emailed them to point out that if they're going to reproduce people's words without permission the least they could do is get the attributions correct. It's not like DH has a different email address these days, it would have taken them five minutes to email him for permission.
I still can't cope with the idea of Jyoti Mishra posting to Usenet in the week he had a number one single.
Jyoti was always very cool. There was a thread later on in which someone said cockily "so when did YOU last have a Number One?" in response to some criticism of a band on TOTP or something. Jyoti answered "last year". :-)
It always amuses me that the first place I ever "met" DH was uk.media.tv.misc, almost five years before I met him in real life, even though we lived three streets apart at that point.
