Hello! I am in easyInternetCafé Victoria in London. The weekend has been memorable for all the right reasons and I am extremely glad to have experienced it. More about the hunt at some later point, but I shall note now that ericklendl is a perseverant puzzle-solving stud. Today I have been to Reading to meet alhewison and look around the university. That too was very cool.
I will be in London for all of tomorrow daytime; one possibility would be to make the most of my 24-hour easyInternetCafé pass, but that's not a very interesting or exciting one. Please could I meet up with London types who I don't normally see instead? On Wednesday and Thursday I will be in Potters Bar and on Friday I will be in Oxford. I would love to meet up with random people who have gaps in their schedule!
It's a shame that you're not free in London on Wednesday because I have a quadruple free period and that is (believe it or not) enough time to get to London and spend and hour there and then get back again in time for my general studies lesson! Have a good time whatever you do! If you have no one to meet up with, go to the Tate (Britain, i.e. not the Modern) because it's free and warm and really good fun. Or the British Museum (equally free, as are a lot of museums).
Travel down from Cambridge to London and back just to meet me for an hour? You must be crazy, lady! :-) (So much time spent travelling, though I know you don't mind travelling and are obviously a productive traveller, but the expense...)
Wednesday morning could be possible; haven't worked out what time I'm going to be travelling to Potters Bar. I will talk to the guy who is putting me up there and find out what time I need to be there in order to do useful things for him on Wednesday.
I have had the London Museum (Museum of London?) recommended, which is apparently somewhere near Barbican. That is on this afternoon's agenda.
Let's keep in touch! I hadn't intended to drag you out of your way down to London, but it would be fantastic to get to meet you.
Well, I'm used to trains and it's hardly as if you're down south that frequently is it?! Anyway, it's a way of avoiding working during my quadruple free.
We went to the Museum of London in year 5 before going to see The Jungle Book at the Young Vic (naked men in the production cause much amusement for the nine year old girls). All I remember about that museum was a huge golden Cinderalla type coach, and an exhibition on the plague and the great fire (which we were studying in history at the time).
I think we should definately try and meet up at some point this year - even when I've started uni, because I might be more time-flexible then?
I expect that I will be going directly from Lewisham to Potter's Bar directly tomorrow. However, if you were thinking of going from Cambridge to London and back, might it work out as less expensive and less time-consuming travel for you to to go from Cambridge to Potter's Bar and back instead?
I have grave doubts that we will be able to make this work in practice because I do not think that I will be able to check LJ next before Wednesday afternoon, I don't have a mobile phone and I don't know your mobile number. (My e-mail record is at home.) I'm inclined to say "let's not try anything this time" rather than mess you round further and leaving you hanging.
Alternatively, if the Potter's Bar option sounds good, you could post your mobile number in your LJ (probably a private entry visible only to me?), hope that I see it in time (sadly, no promises) and then I'll get in touch. I'll leave it up to you completely, but I have a feeling that I would be messing you round so much and leaving you hanging uncertainly that it may be more practical to leave it until next time (fair chance of which being March).
Yes, I think that it's a bit too late to chance it now. March might be good, let's see what happens. Equally, from July until late September I will have a lot of free time (although we're going on possibly two holidays and I'm probably going to do SYPT agian) so t00bing would be a fun option then.
Have a good day, whatever you end up doing.
Friday, excellent! What time will you be here?
Don't know; haven't investigated travel between Potter's Bar and Oxford. It's between a single from PBar to London, a cross-London transfer and a period return (out Fri, back Mon) from London to Oxford and trying to do things with two singles. Roughly "afternoon", though.
Plan for the day: I should be available in the afternoon until about 6:30pm, when I am meeting up with zorac
and a load of gamers you don't know to go to Laser Quest and then to go and eat curry. You would be most welcome to tag along, but (a) it's non-trivially expensive and (b) you don't know the people involved. Seeing you on Fri afternoon for the "goodness, has it been two years already?" memorial meetup would be wonderful. Am trying to see other nice Oxford types as well. Heck, if there could be a mini-afternoon-t00bage at three days notice, so much the better, but don't go to the effort of dragging non-Oxford types to Oxford just to see little me. :-)
I am free on Friday from 1:00! If you were thinking of 4pm or later, Hollywood Cocktails on Walton Street is an option, with happy hour prices from 4-7pm. Kay (T) is also free at this time.
From my calculaitons Mr J is working later shifts this week so would be unable to join us (unless he could worm his way out of work early, it is Friday after all!)
See you tomorrow! (Usual mobile number in case of last minute planning).
Or, of course, Eagle and Child. But I prefer HC. :D
Hmm. There seems to be very little chance of me getting to Oxford before 3 or 4pm. Please can you liaise with foreverdirt
(who will only be available until 5pm that day) to add to the simultaneous multit00b0sity? Pubs and bars = costly. (Even during Happy Hour.)
I only have your mobile number in an e-mail at home that I can't get to. Idea: could you post it in a visible-to-me-only post and I will try to write it down and not lose it? :-D
Did the card sent to you c/o your Evil Real Name at your Evil Real Address arrive properly?
I'll make the post tonight.
I haven't got a card yet - when did you send it?
Am not sure what the location of the t00bing should be if not a pub or bar - my room is a bus ride away, and the return fare would cost the best part of a pint! For reference, HC has cocktails at £3 and non-alcho ones at £1.75 during Happy Hour. Though if you can suggest a different location which would keep us all warm, please do! :D
Yourevil Realname, Tum-te-tum College Annexe, Nameofyour Road, Oxford OXsomething something something something, he said helpfully. Perhaps I should just have sent it directly to Tum-te-tum College instead.
1.75 for a non-alchy cocktail isn't so bad, but it's still really pretty bad. :-)

£1.75 sounds very steep for a soft drink to me (says he, never having been to a cocktail bar, happy hour or not). Borders Café has been suggested; there's also G&D's (though that can sometimes tend to be overcrowded). Or, I suppose, you can get coffee or a soft drink at any of the department-store-restaurants around town.

Of course, I said that without noticing that there seem to be two separate mini-t00bs (of which the second isn't really a t00b) so feel free to ignore me.
Still, if given a choice between Hollywood Cocktails and Eagle&Child I choose the latter.
Do you still have my mobile number from the November t00bage? If not, it's here
. I don't mind where we meet, and can offer my room as a last resort (it's warm and dry and there's tea and the potential for biscuits) although I have a tute at 5pm - could you let me know when decisions are made?
The buck stops here. It is time for an executive decision.
With your permission, because one can't volunteer other people's rooms, I propose to come and see you at your room as soon as I get to Oxford (which I would estimate as, ooh, 3:30pm +/- 45 minutes, unless things go spectacularly pear shaped tomorrow, which would be cause for further contact by phone). We will then advance to Hollywood Cocktails to be there in time for four. (Conversely, if I am not at your room by four, I will advance directly to HC, not that I know where it is, but hey.) I will have one non-alky cocktail there at a leisurely pace and then leave, accompanying you back to Balliol in good time for your 5 o'clock tute. This is at least partly because Balliol is near Borders Cafe, where I shall catch up with other folk before five. I shall depart Borders Cafe by 6:30 for Laser Quest and curry. Anyone is welcome to accompany for any or all of these things.
If I ask for you by your real name at Balliol Lodge, the porters won't have a fit, will they? (Even if they do, I can always ring your mobile!)
Sounds great to me. I have no idea what the porters would do if someone asked for me by any name, so it's probably simpler - unless conservation of your mobile credit/battery is an issue - if you just call me when you're approaching Balliol and I'll come to meet you at the porter's lodge. I'll certainly be in college, but I may not be in my room.
HC is on Walton St (thank you, multimap
Ah, I "don't gots no" steenkin' mobile. Instead, I shall call from a payphone en route, probably in about the Gloucester Green area. It will be a very short call, because payphone to mobile calls consume coins at unnervingly spectacular rates.
HC looks like it is where Frevd's used to be. Is it in fact Frevd's under a new name, I wonder?
and I have
no schedule, most of our days are one long gap. :-)
Sounds likely that, if you wanted to, we could negotiate matching gaps and meet up! Would Friday afternoon be a convnenient time to visit?
Yup, works for me. We could haul imc
out of work and meet in town for a late-ish 'lunch' (which tends to mean I am the only one eating!) if you like.
Would some point between 5pm and 6:30pm be good for you all? This would probably work better for imc
's work schedule plus I'm hoping to see other friends in Oxford until 5-ish.
Of course, we could merge both meetings together, but I'm sure there's a Geek Social Fallacy saying "whoa, that's actually a bad idea..." :-)
Yes, I don't see why not. Where?
Where would be convenient for you? I'll probably be in the Jericho area at that time; I would be happy to wander to the wilds of the East, but it'll take me some time with a large suitcase in tow.
Well imc will be in the Science Area and I will be manhandling a pram so probably Borders cafe would be best (less smoky than anywhere in George St).
Sounds excellent! Not quite sure where it is, though "somewhere near the little Sainsbury's and Debenhams and the cinema - you know, the one opposite the church in the middle of the road" rings bells. Is that even vaguely accurate?
Would 5 o'clock-ish be a good time? It would be a good excuse to break one meeting up just before 5, when I know one person has to go anyway.
OK here, although I've been trying to follow the projected timeline of your Friday and am now thoroughly confused. :-) I shall be in there from sometime-past-four-thirty, I expect.
I am just so happy that (at last) you've seemingly come out of one of these puzzle thingies 100% satisfied! Didn't think I was all that studly myself - maybe the perseverance counterbalanced it. Either way, thanks! :-)
My plans for the rest of the week are unavoidably fluid at the moment, but if I'm fully fit on Thursday and your early evening's blank we might be able to sort something out (HINT - Potters Bar is on the same line as Huntingdon!)
Oh, no I can't. Mr. Fuzzyhead forgot dentist appointment at 18:30 on Thursday. Hello Mr. Idea - meet Mrs. Kibosh.
Dude, I sucked at the puzzle solving - absolutely stunk at it. :-) However, that didn't stop it from being a fun weekend. More thereon later. Might be quite soon, actually.
In fairness, you (I somehow *guess* it was you!) did a heck of a lot of excellent research on the DDR puzzle - so much so that it really deserved to yield a solution, and I was very sorry that it didn't.
I take it you'll be gone by the time I get off work at 5 tomorrow? Oh woe is me!
Needn't be. See comments to Chris' previous post and the email I've sent to an address certainly not in your LJ profile...
That settles it. I'm going to buy a travelcard (zones 1 to 4, I think) for the day and go travelling.
Travelling around London is expensive.
Gnot gnecessarily. I will be chez Alice and Owen from "a bit after 6pm" tonight, which is vaguely in your neck of the woods. (In the sense of "in London" and "east London".) No plans as to what's going to happen after that at all, but something involving additional meeting would be excellent.
Which zone are you in? I'm trying to work out whether I should buy a travelcard for today or not and, if so, which zones. (Having too much fun with Oyster Pre-Pay at the moment.) I probably should have bought one earlier, but didn't think of it sufficiently early.
